Abstract: Zhufu (柱斧, a kind of axe made of crystal) is an important instrument. There were different explanations of it, such as walking stick, sacrificial vessel, axe or Zhufuzi (柱拂子, a kind of daily uten- sil, made of crystal, jade or copper and iron). The author argues that Zhufu is a tool to guide the emperor,whose range of application and shape had been limited strictly. Zhufu was also known as jade axe, which was used to greet the emperor before the palace or to guide the carriage of the emperor. The crystal Zhufu was used to guide the sedans of senior officials. In traditional Chinese culture, the axe is a symbol of power.The shape of axe appeared in officers' Zhufu was abolished the ceremonials very early, during the era of Daguan from which Zhufu evolved in Song Dynasty.
