Objective To understand the prevalence and epidemiologic characteristics of metabolic syndrome (MS)among mid -aged residents in Hefei city. Methods The stratified cluster random sampling was used to select 2860 residents aged > 40 years. They were given questionnaire survey, physician check-up and laboratory test. The MS was diagnosed according to the diagnostic criteria of International Diabetes Federation (IDF). Results A total of 2860 residents were interviewed with questionnaire, including 1093 men(38. 22%)and 1767 women(61. 78%). The average age was 56. 38 ± 10. 8,the MS prevalence was 34. 55% and the standardized prevalence of MS was 33. 73%,and the prevalence of female(39. 7%)was significantly higher than that of male(26. 2%). The MS prevalence changed among different ages, different education degree, different marital status and different living conditions. The prevalence of MS components was 25. 8% ~ 56. 4% . On the basis of central obesity,499(17. 4%),369(12. 9%)and 120(4. 2%)people were found abnormal with two, three and four components respectively. The combination of central obesity and low high density lipoprotein cholesterol with hypertension ac-counted for 18. 7% . The prevalence of combination of central obesity and high TG and high glucose in female was higher than that in male ex-cept other combinations. Conclusion The MS prevalence is high in Hefei, especially in women residents. A large proportion of the people have two or more kinds of metabolic abnormality.
