China is one of the largest energy consumers in the world. Energy use in China has aroused much concern both the domestically and the internationaly. Our intent is to place the changing pattern of energy use in China in a lengthy time perspective of the national industrialization. A larger context is combined with a cross - sectional approach - China plus five other countries - and addressed through the general model, namely the industrial structure - energy use interconnection model. The findings are salutary. First, they suggest that a diversified economic structure is consistent with diminished intensity in energy use. Secondly, the facts with a down -up demand trend in China's energy use in last 10 years imply that a diversified energy structure promotes reductions in energy intensity is out of use. Finally, one is led inevitably to the conclusion that the unexpected changed pattern in China's energy use in recent years could be sourced most probably by the statistical mistakes.
