This paper provides a new approach to account for the relationship between organizational slack and in- novation by integrating innovation search theory. We argue that the relationship between organizational slack and product innovation is moderated by boundary-spanning search capability under open environment. Empirical fin- dings suggest that organizational slack has a positive impact on product innovation. Meanwhile, firms' bound- ary-spanning search capability positively moderates the relationship between organizational slack and product inno- vation. Specifically, while market search capability negatively moderates the relationship between organizational slack and product innovation, technology search capability has no significant influence on this relationship. Howe- ver, their interaction effect is significant.
