Lycopersicon escalentum is an excellent vegetable, and worldwide attention has focused on ways to develop and modify this plant through genetic engineering. This review outlines the status of research on transgenic tomatoes with genes from Streptococcus mutans , Vibrio cholerae , Escherichia coli , DPT, Yersinia pestis , Mycobacterium tuberculosis, and fungi.
