Abstract "New constricted" is a natural mutant of body shape discovered in the silkworm germplasm bank at Southwest University. Its larvae are characterized with constriction and pigment deposition in the center of body segments, and bulge at the abdominal inter-segmental membrane. These characters are especially obvious at later days of the fifth-instar, which make the larvae resemble those with the constriced (co) gene. Generally, the adults' dorsal and abdominal surfaces have very few scales. Genetic analysis showed that the new constricted appearance is controlled by a recessive mutant gene. It was named new constricted with the gene symbol co-n. Linkage analysis indicated that co-n is linked with yellow blood (Y) gene and belongs to the 2nd linkage group. It is the first body shape mutant among more than thirty mutants which have been discovered on the 2nd linkage group. The resutt of three-point test among new constricted (co-n), grey color egg (Gr) and yellow blood ( Y), and data of the latest linkage map published by Banno Yutaka in 2005 showed that the gene locus of co-n is at 2-5.7.
