In order to investigate the influence of ethnic languages and characters on the self-esteem of college students of Han, Miao and Hui ethnic groups, a test of their explicit and implicit self-esteems is conducted. The results show that the explicit self-esteem of Hui students who do not have their own language and characters is higher than Han students who have their own language and characters and Miao students who have their own language but seldom use their own characters. However, Hui students' implicit self-esteem is significantly lower than the other two groups of students. This study also demonstrates that ethnic languages can affect the explicit and implicit self-esteems of ethnic groups, which provides important psychological evidences for enacting ethnic language policies in China.
