Mexico has more than 50 indigenous groups, which make up approximately 10% of the total population. It is a state with a great number of indigenous people in Latin America. How to build reasonable indigenous policies and to deal with the conflicts between the mainstream culture and indigenous culture have been important issues for Mexico government. Mexico's indigenous policies have experienced several stages, from race assimilation in the early period, ethnic integration during modernization process to ethnic pluralism in the contemporary era. The historical experiences show that the government can only make indigenous policies suitable to Mexico's condition and accept the plural cultures of indigenous people, then Mexico develops healthily and stably.
