Is art a form of creation or a technique close to perfection7 Is there a need to distinguish art from handicraft? These are the topics debated among the western scholars. Since the 18th century,Western European countries began to make a distinction between art and craft,with art classified in the category of aesthetics and craft in the category of practicality. However,when transplanted to different cultures,this method of distinction may not fit into their particular reality. While in traditional Chinese aesthetics, aesthetic pursuits and practicality are in harmonious unity, and similar notions can also be found in the Slavic people's understanding of traditional craft. The eastern Slavic culture has a long history of handicraft tradition. The Russian handicraft masters have contributed to handicraft works of art embodying the essence of Slavic spirit. They are profound in imagination and symbolic meanings. In introducing the folk craft of the Slavic people,the paper presents the interaction between individuality and tradition, creation and craftsmanship.
