While an original and fundamental virtue of humanity, gratitude has been long forgotten in the socalled ＂modem ethics＂. As a representative of modem ethics, however, Kant studied this virtue in his The Metaphysics of Morality, and regarded it as a sacred duty. A discussion on the issue of gratitude will increase our understanding of the richness of Kant＇ s ethics.
