Invasion of the surrounding original lymphatic vessel and induction of the lymphangiogenesis formation are the necessary conditions for tumor lymphatic metastasis. VEGF-C and VEGF-D are specific lymphatic growth regulators, which are closely related to the development and differentiation of lymphatic vessels. The increase of the ratio of VEGF-C to VEGF-D might be the early event and a potential evaluation index for tumorigenesis and lymphatic metastasis. This review focuses on the research progress in the structure, function and the ratio of VEGF-C to VEGF-D. The correlation between ratio of VEGF-C to VEGF-D and the tumor lymphatic metastasis is also discussed.
