Phenyl isothiocyanate fluorescein (FHBS)was synthesized and characterized. The recognition of FHBS for Hg^2+ was studied using UV-Vis and fluorescence spectroscopy in ethanol-HEPES solution (volume ratio 1 : 1 , pH = 7.0). This probe exhibited high selectivity and sensitivity for Hg^2+ than other ion metals and anions, and other metal ions and anions did not interfere with the detection of Hg^2+. Addition of Hg^2+ caused a visual color change from colorless to bright yellow and a fluorescence change from colorless to bright green, so FHBS can be developed as a eolorimetric and fluorometric dual-model probes for mercury ( H ) ion. This system was also applied in bioimaging.
