中国改革开放以来，英语学习出现了“热”和“冷”的相左现象。一方面学习英语的热情高涨，能用英语的人越来越多；另一方面又有人认为英语专业学生没有自己的专业。本文认为英语是一门专业，英语专业学习具有工具和研究的双重性。两者相互支持，相互关联。英语专业学生要努力把自己培养成为新时代的复合型外语人才。

Since China＇s reforming and opening to the world, there has been an atmosphere of ＂hot＂ and ＂cold＂ in English learning. On the one hand,an increasing number of people learn to speak English. On the other hand, a different voice arises：English majors have no major of their own. Under such circumstances,the paper advances a point that English as a human language is one of the subjects of the English discipline and that English learning for English majors has the dual nature： one is using English as a tool for his or her work concerned and the other is using English as a medium to make scientific research. Both of the tasks for English majors are interrelated and one cannot be parted from the other. English majors should try their best to become multi disciplinary in knowledge in the new era.
